Why Travel Freely Likes It
This is Southwest's highest annual fee when it comes to their personal credit cards.
Despite the $229 fee, it comes with some nice perks for people who fly Southwest often, which can many times outweigh the cost. This includes 7,500 bonus points on each account anniversary as well as access to elevated experiences such as preferred and extra legroom seating for the cardholder and up to 8 guests on a single reservation.
10/15/26 Update: Southwest is changing how welcome offers count toward the Southwest Companion Pass. Starting in 2027, welcome offer bonus points will no longer qualify.
The good news: if you apply and are approved by December 2, 2026, Southwest will count your welcome offer points toward your 2026 Companion Pass qualification, even if they don’t post until early 2027. That makes this your last chance to earn a Companion Pass good through December 31, 2027 using a credit card welcome offer. Check out our updated Southwest Companion Pass Guide for all the details.
